Haisheng Liang & Paper Life: Triangle Folded Paper Lantern | Lucca Biennale 2018

In 2011, contemporary artist Haisheng Liang created an interesting variety of polyhedrons by folding a silver ratio rectangular paper into multiple triangles with multiple quadrihedrons inside, which were later displayed at a number of art exhibitions.

In addition to using cardboards and corrugated paperboards to create large stereoscopic paper art installations, he also uses adopts bamboo strips and yarn paper used in traditional Chinese kites and applies corresponding techniques into his creation. In Chinese traditional calligraphy practice, there are red-grid shapes like the Union Flag to help write in the right place, which are also triangular pattern structures. The triangular folded paper lanterns exhibited are based on the concept of bamboo paper kite and red-grid shapes. Inherit the tradition, then innovate the art form and experience.

The triangle origami lantern is an a collaborative art paper lantern created by Paper Life and the triangle origami artist Haisheng Liang. Its magic lies in that it is not only filled with the three-dimensional structure of mathematical rational thinking, but also integrates natural and primitive material technics. A piece of seemingly flat paper, after simply folded, can become transform into a stereoscopic paper lantern with structural beauty. It breaks up the structural limitations of the past folding paper lanterns, and turns out to be an innovative lantern full of wisdom and art.

The triangular origami lanterns are purely hand-made with ancient paper and carbonized bamboo strips. The triangle symbolizes stableness and balance, and each lantern carries our sincere wish for world peace and stability. At the moment when the world sees the development of Chinese modern aesthetics, paper lanterns are no longer just outdated or stereotyped, we enable the paper lanterns shine glow with new artistic vitality.

Haisheng Liang

Haisheng Liang was born in Aug. 1961, Nanning Guangxi, China. He would like to share an exciting discovery “Multiple Tetrahedrons Origami” : One A4 metric rectangular paper can be folded into multiple interesting 3D tetrahedron models in the same shape and size, shapes of them can be Fractal, Regular Pentagon, Octadron, Tranglur prism, Quadrangular etc.

In the intoxicating late autumn of 2009, a couple dedicated in visual design decided to embark on a road less travelled, and with the yearning for beauty, they established Paper Life, a life art brand mainly focusing on origami lanterns.
